How to inspect weld seam of pipe spools?

Pipe spools are a part of pipeline,which is prefabricated in a fabrication shop,for future installation in the field.They are often flanged,to facilitate the connection to other spools.Among flanges and fittings,they are jointed together by weld seam.Welding is very important work to guarantee quality of pipe spools.So how to inspect the weld seam of pipe spools?

There are two methods to inspect weld seam – destructive inspection and NDT(nondestructive testing).

Destructive inspection includes mechanical property test,chemical component,metallographic test.

NDT (nondestructive testing) includes visual inspection,hydrotest,pneumatic test,MT (Magnetic Particle test),PT (penetrate inspection),UT (Ultrasonic Test),RT (radiographic testing).

There are so many methods to inspection weld seam,it’s not necessary to use all methods.We do inspection according to project requirement and choose suitable methods.

Pipe spools are welded by flanges,pipes and pipe fittings.There are different kinds of weld seam.

For butt weld,which is mainly used for pipes,fittings and weld neck flange.We choose UT or RT.

For fillet weld,which is mainly flanges(except for weld neck flange) with pipe or fittings,we choose MT or PT.
